History of the Pyramid
Pyramids have a fascinating history that spans several civilizations and centuries. The following are some key points:
The mud-brick structures known as ziggurats were the first structures to use the pyramid shape.
There is an ancient pyramid in Egypt that was built around 2630 B.C. at Saqqara, for the third dynasty’s King Djoser. It began as a mastaba but evolved into something much more ambitious, known as the Step Pyramid.
During the late third dynasty (c. 2325 B.C.) and into the sixth (c. 2350 B.C. ), Egypt reached its peak of pyramid building.
A magnificent human-made structure, the Great Pyramid of Giza was built during the 4th dynasty (c. 2575-2465 BCE). A number of them were erected along the west bank of the Nile River near Al-Jizah (Giza), in northern Egypt.
A frenetic period of construction, roughly 2550 to 2490 BC, saw the construction of Giza’s three famous pyramids and their elaborate burial complexes. Among the three pyramids, Khufu (the tallest), Khafre, and Menkaure were built by the pharaohs.
The pyramid’s smooth, angled sides were intended to facilitate the king’s soul’s ascent to heaven, where he would join the gods, particularly Ra, the sun god.
